Stuck at building on fire

I've watched a couple walkthrough videos and can't see what I'm doing wrong. I'm at the part where the apartment explodes and Max wakes up outside with the whole building on fire. I walk in and go up to the stairs. He starts his speech about "Look at me..." and then a piece of the roof falls and kills him. It doesn't matter how quickly or slowly I go over there, or if I walk somewhere else first. The piece of ceiling always falls and kills him.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

When you're walking through the building try to avoid the fire and keep moving. A few enemies will pop out, just try killing them as soon as you can before they kill you.

There will be harder parts to play.

That's strange, never happened to me... maybe restart the checkpoint or level.

OK, I'm an idiot. I thought the part when he gets to the stairs was a cut scene since the angle changes to that kind of backward facing artsy angle. All I had to do was press forward so he'd get out of the way of the falling debris and climb the stairs.

I'm an idiot, too. The same thing was happening to me and I tried different routes, although there really isn't any other place to go. Then I realized I had to keep pushing forward through the dialogue.  I tend to stop pressing buttons during cut scenes.
